Passover

2024
April 22-30

Passover commemorates the story of Exodus from Egypt and the transition of our people from slavery to freedom. Passover begins on the 15th day of the month of Nisan. Most Jews in the diaspora celebrated Passover for seven days while Jews in the land of Israel for eight days. It is one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays.

Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation hosts a seder on the first night of the holiday, a festive meal that involves the re-telling of the Exodus through stories and song and the consumption of ritual foods, including matzah and maror (bitter herbs), haroset (mixture of fruit, nuts, wine, and cinnamon), matzah ball soup and other traditional foods. The seder’s rituals and other readings are outlined in the Haggadah.
