THE SECRET SAUCE CAFÉ

Reviewed by Maureen Sullivan

Fantastic individualized service.  Super fresh delicious appetizers.  Reasonably priced.  Be prepared for a wait.  Barbara’s famous corn casserole was fabulous.  Salmon freshly grilled by Chef Joseph was perfectly cooked.

And the Secret Sauce was absolutely superb. Wine available.  Spotless restrooms and easy parking.  Get there early.

So, where is this fabulous cafe and what is this secret sauce?  The Secret Sauce Cafe is at Sta. Margarita 113, Riberas del Pilar….AKA… the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation.  The second and fourth Fridays of most months, except this August (see below), the Cafe sets up in our sanctuary.  People bring the most amazing food, carefully and creatively prepared in their homes to share with their old friends and new visitors.  Though it is never known in advance what the menu will be, it is without doubt, the best food in Ajijic.  Some suppliers specialize in appetizers, some come with amazing vegan dishes, other bring mouth-watering desserts.  And, of course, there is always a little wine and challah.

Now for the Secret Sauce.  It is part caring and part sharing with each other.  It is also the pre-dinner service, usually an hour long, where a leader from our community talks about the meaning of this service that has been observed down through the millennium and around the world every Friday evening.  There are always chances to learn and participate; ask questions and give answers; and sing.  Yes, it is potluck, so we all feel incredibly lucky to be with each other, breaking bread together and bringing a little more peace and joy into our lives.

PLEASE NOTE:  During the month of August 2019, there will be only one potluck on August 16th.

Services begin at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at 7:00 pm

Dishes are vegetarian except for fish. No meat, poultry or shellfish.  Bring enough to serve 6 people.  Everyone is welcome.
